The Notre Dame Alumni Association’s online directory shows that Andy Schellhammer died on October 20, 2020. An online search turned up no accounts of his death. In response to our inquiry about the details of his death, a representative from the Advancement Records of the University’s Department of Development wrote:
After an email from the ND Club of Phoenix went out recently, a family member replied on November 2, 2020—using the email [address] we had on file—indicating he passed away on 10/20/2020. No obit was found on our end either.
Andy was born on March 25, 1947, in Bronx, New York. According to the 1950 U.S. census, he lived with his parents—Andrew and Eleanora Schellhammer—on Long Island at 45 Ash Street, Lindenhurst, New York. Nine years later, he appeared on the front cover of Parade Magazine with Yankee pitcher Bob Turley, in which Turley wrote an article for Little Leaguers.

The magazine reported the following on the second page:
Spring training starts in a few days for big-league baseball teams. Bob Turley, pride of the New York Yankees’ pitching staff, offers advice to Little Leaguers on page 23. Our cover this week shows that Bob can take advice, too—handed him by Little League catcher Andrew Schellhammer Jr. of Lindenhurst, N.Y.
Eleven-year-old Andy, by the way, is the son of Andy Schellhammer, vice president of the Little Leagues in Lindenhurst. He tells us that New York’s Yankee Stadium, where the cover was “shot,” is certain to have special meaning for both father and son from now on.
After graduating from Lindenhurst High School in 1965, Andy enrolled at ND the following September and graduated with a B.S. in civil engineering in February 1970. He lived in the following residences while at school:
1965–66: 154 Cavanaugh Hall
1966–67: No hall listed
1967–68: 318 N. Sunnyside Avenue, South Bend
1968–69: 318 N. Sunnyside Avenue, South Bend
1969–70: 430 Allen Street, South Bend
His photograph did not appear in the 1969 Dome.
On Wednesday, May 13, 1970, Newsday, Suffolk Edition [Melville, New York, page 23A] announced Andrew’s engagement to “Debra Ann Gimbl, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard E. Gimbl of Lindenhurst.”
The next online mention of Andrew was in the opinion section of the Arizona Republic on Sunday, February 26, 2006. He lived in Scottsdale then and subsequently wrote frequent letters to the editor. His last known contribution appeared in the newspaper on April 21, 2019, when he resided in Buckeye, thirty-five miles west of Phoenix.
If anyone has more information about Andy Schellhammer, please contact the class of 1969’s secretary—John Hickey—whose email address is in Notre Dame Magazine’s class notes.
Our sincerest condolences to Debra, their family, and friends. Requiescas in pace, Andy.
